Ghana Welcomes Historic Bulk Carrier MV CBS Years

Ghana’s maritime industry is poised for a groundbreaking event on January 27, 2026, with the arrival of the MV CBS Years at the Port of Takoradi. This vessel, the largest bulk carrier ever to dock in West Africa, boasts a staggering carrying capacity of 300,000 deadweight tonnes (DWT). The Ghana Manganese Company (GMC), Cosco Shipping Lines, and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) will jointly host a formal inauguration ceremony to mark this significant milestone.

The MV CBS Years’ arrival aligns with GMC’s ambitious goal of exporting one million tonnes in 2026. Industry experts anticipate that this development will greatly enhance bulk export volumes through Takoradi Port, positively impacting export revenues for GPHA and contributing to Ghana’s overall economic growth.

Extensive Preparations for Safe Operations

In preparation for the MV CBS Years‘ arrival, GMC and GPHA have implemented comprehensive technical and operational measures to ensure safe and efficient berthing and cargo handling. Key personnel from GPHA, including pilots, received specialized training in China, where they participated in advanced simulation exercises tailored to the unique hydrodynamic and navigational challenges posed by cape-size vessels. This training aims to facilitate safe and controlled berthing and loading operations under local command.

Additionally, GPHA has developed a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to guide the vessel’s operations at Takoradi Port. To further enhance safety protocols, GMC and GPHA have engaged a third-party risk assessment firm to conduct digital simulations of the vessel’s berthing and unberthing maneuvers. The operation will also incorporate real-time UAV surveillance to monitor the vessel’s movements and ensure compliance with safety standards.

The inauguration ceremony is expected to draw senior government officials, industry leaders, international shipping partners, and key stakeholders from the maritime and logistics sectors. Organizers emphasize that this event will not only celebrate a historic achievement in maritime operations but also showcase Ghana’s growing capabilities in port infrastructure development, professional expertise, and cross-sector collaboration.

The arrival of the MV CBS Years highlights Ghana’s expanding role as a competitive maritime hub in West Africa and its commitment to fostering sustainable economic growth through enhanced maritime trade.
