Norway’s K. Sætre Rederi Unveils All-Electric Cargo Ship

Norwegian shipping company K. Sætre Rederi is making waves in sustainable maritime operations with its latest order for an all-electric dry cargo vessel. Scheduled for delivery in March 2028 from the Dutch shipyard Royal Bodewes, this state-of-the-art vessel is set to enhance zero-emission shipping along Norway’s coastline. The ship’s long-term freight contract with steel producer 7 Steel Nordic ensures consistent cargo volumes, further cementing its operational significance.

Innovative Design Meets Sustainability

The newly commissioned vessel will boast a cargo capacity of approximately 3,400 to 3,600 tonnes. Equipped with a powerful 13.3 MWh battery system, it will achieve an impressive electric range exceeding 270 nautical miles, positioning it among the longest-range electric cargo ships available. This capability allows the vessel to traverse extensive sections of the Norwegian coast without emitting pollutants, utilizing existing charging infrastructure for sustainable operations.

Åge Sætre from K. Sætre Rederi highlighted the technological advancements represented by this project, stating, “With this range, we can operate large parts of the Norwegian coastline fully electric.” This innovation not only enhances operational efficiency but also contributes to Norway’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions in maritime transport.

Tailored specifically for the logistics of 7 Steel, the vessel will transport steel products from Mo i Rana, helping to maintain a circular and low-emission supply chain. The partnership between Sætre and 7 Steel spans over three decades, with the new vessel set to replace the Rana Frakt, which has successfully served the same route for more than 30 years.

Technological Advancements and Local Impact

The all-electric vessel will fly the Norwegian flag and adhere to local crew terms, promoting regional employment. Haugesund-based SEAM will deliver the electrical integration and propulsion package, making it the largest single supplier for this project. The design emphasizes efficiency, incorporating an optimized hull form, advanced hydrodynamic features, and smart energy management systems to maximize battery life and minimize overall energy consumption.
