ESL Shipping Expands Fleet with New Acquisition
ESL Shipping is enhancing its operational capacity by acquiring a secondhand bulker, ensuring steady service while awaiting new vessels. The Finnish company, part of the Aspo conglomerate, has purchased a geared ice-class 1A vessel, which will help bridge the gap until its first “Green Handy” ships are delivered in approximately two years.
Strategic Acquisition to Maintain Operations
The newly acquired vessel, named Nordis, was delivered in January in Tallinn and has a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 16,600. This acquisition follows the sale of the 21,353 DWT handysize bulker Kallio last October. Managing Director Mikki Koskinen emphasized that this strategic move is essential for maintaining operational continuity during the transition period. He stated, “By adding this vessel to our fleet, we can safeguard employment for our experienced crew and maintain consistent service for both new and existing customers.”
ESL Shipping’s decision to acquire the Nordis is particularly significant for its core Baltic operations, where ice-class tonnage is vital for year-round service. The company, along with its sister company AtoB@C Shipping, operates a combined fleet of around 40 vessels, ranging from 4,000 to 25,000 DWT. This expansion not only preserves ESL’s carrying capacity but also reinforces its commitment to providing reliable shipping solutions in challenging conditions.

Future Outlook for ESL Shipping
As ESL Shipping prepares for the arrival of its new “Green Handy” vessels, the acquisition of the Nordis serves as a crucial step in ensuring that the company remains competitive in the dry bulk market. The addition of this vessel allows ESL to continue serving its customers effectively while also supporting its crew during this transitional phase. The company’s focus on sustainability and operational efficiency positions it well for future growth in the evolving shipping landscape.
