Tragic Fall Claims Life of Florida Pilot
A Florida pilot tragically lost his life earlier this month following a pilot ladder accident in Panama City. Capt. Phillip Brady, 46, fell while disembarking from the bulk carrier Lowlands Luck, marking yet another incident in a series of accidents related to boarding procedures. Despite swift rescue efforts, Capt. Brady succumbed to his injuries shortly after the fall.
Details of the Incident
On January 12, Capt. Brady was transferring off the 60,000 dwt bulk carrier Lowlands Luck when he fell approximately 15 feet into the water. The St. Andrew’s Bay Pilots confirmed the incident, stating that the pilot boat operator acted quickly, recovering him from the water within two minutes. A Coast Guard crew promptly transported him to a medical facility for treatment. Unfortunately, Capt. Brady did not survive his injuries.
Brady, a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 2001, had served as a Florida pilot in Panama City for the past six years. The maritime community is mourning his loss, with the association describing him as a “respected and dedicated professional mariner.” He is survived by his fiancée and two young children. The association has requested that the public keep Capt. Brady’s family in their thoughts during this challenging time.
The circumstances surrounding Capt. Brady’s fall are currently under investigation. The St. Andrew’s Bay Pilots have asked for patience as they work to uncover the details of this tragic event.
Previous Safety Concerns with Lowlands Luck
The Lowlands Luck had already experienced a hazardous week prior to Capt. Brady’s fall. On January 8, while unloading a bagged-cement cargo at Panama City’s east terminal, a cleaning crew used a muriatic acid solution to remove cement residues from the hold. This interaction with the foggy weather led to the release of acid vapors, resulting in 11 crew members suffering from chest pain and breathing difficulties. All affected individuals were hospitalized, with one reported in critical condition.
The Lowlands Luck, a bulk carrier built in 2023 and flagged in Singapore, continued its commercial voyage after departing Panama City and is currently docked at Port Tampa Bay. The recent incidents involving the vessel have raised concerns about safety protocols during loading and unloading operations.
