Hanwha Systems Achieves Certification for AI-Powered Combat Ship
SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) — Hanwha Systems Co. has successfully obtained certification from Lloyd’s Register, a prominent naval certification organization based in Britain, for its innovative multipurpose combat ship concept powered by artificial intelligence (AI). The announcement was made by the company on Thursday, highlighting a significant milestone in the development of advanced naval technology.
The vessel, classified as a 2,000-ton-class ship, has been awarded an Approval in Principle (AIP) certification. This certification aligns with Hanwha Systems’ vision of creating a smart battleship, which is part of its next-generation manned naval platform initiative. The certification from Lloyd’s Register is a crucial endorsement, as the organization is recognized as one of the world’s leading maritime classification societies, alongside the American Bureau of Shipping and Norway’s DNV. These organizations ensure that manufacturing standards comply with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) construction guidelines.
Innovative Features of the AI-Powered Combat Ship
Hanwha Systems’ concept model integrates a sophisticated AI-powered combat management system, enhancing operational efficiency and decision-making capabilities. Additionally, the ship is equipped with a multifunction radar utilizing active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology, which provides superior surveillance and targeting capabilities.
One of the standout features of this combat ship is its incorporation of unmanned system solutions. This technology not only enhances the ship’s operational versatility but also significantly reduces the number of crew members required for its operation—by approximately half compared to traditional manned vessels. This reduction in crew size is complemented by a stealth design that minimizes the ship’s detectability, making it a formidable asset in modern naval warfare.

The certification handover ceremony took place in Seoul on January 28, 2026, where representatives from Hanwha Systems and Lloyd’s Register celebrated this achievement. The successful certification marks a pivotal step in the evolution of naval combat capabilities, positioning Hanwha Systems at the forefront of maritime innovation.
As the global defense landscape continues to evolve, the integration of AI and advanced technologies in naval platforms is becoming increasingly vital. Hanwha Systems‘ commitment to developing cutting-edge solutions reflects a broader trend in the industry toward smarter, more efficient, and less detectable naval vessels. This development not only enhances national security but also reinforces South Korea’s position in the global defense market.
