Gweru Mayor Demands Action on Poor Service Delivery
Gweru Mayor Councillor Martin Chivhoko has issued a stern warning to the city’s engineering department, emphasizing that immediate action will be taken against officials who neglect their responsibilities. This directive comes in response to escalating concerns regarding the deterioration of essential services, particularly road maintenance. During an ordinary council meeting held last week, Chivhoko expressed his frustration over the slow responses from the sewer section and the disorganized state of road works, which have been a source of complaints among councillors.
Chivhoko’s remarks highlight the urgent need for improved supervision within the local authority. He specifically pointed out issues with council tipper trucks, alleging that some drivers have been selling gravel to private contractors while only delivering minimal loads for city road maintenance. “These practices are slowing down the road maintenance programme,” he stated, urging the newly appointed Town Clerk Livingston Churu to restore order and accountability in management.
The mayor also noted that recent rains have exposed significant weaknesses in the city’s road infrastructure, underscoring the necessity for immediate interventions. He proposed that the council consider investing in climate-resilient road construction technologies and explore public-private partnerships to expedite repairs.
Focus on Waste Management and Environmental Initiatives
While addressing the challenges of road maintenance, Mayor Chivhoko acknowledged the council’s progress in improving water supply services, praising the team’s dedication to this critical area. However, he stressed that refuse collection and waste management remain high priorities. Chivhoko urged the council to extend its efforts beyond mere collection, advocating for public education and awareness campaigns aimed at reducing waste generation.
He suggested that the council could collaborate with local businesses and schools to promote recycling initiatives, thereby fostering a culture of sustainability within the community.
