Tragic Fall Claims Life on Colombian Bulk Carrier
In a heartbreaking incident off the coast of Buenaventura, Colombia, a crew member aboard the bulker Cetus Narwhal has died following a fall in one of the ship’s cargo holds. The Cetus Narwhal, a geared bulk carrier, was approximately 30 nautical miles from the Buenaventura sea buoy when the accident occurred. Reports indicate that the ship’s bosun fell while working in a cargo hold. The Buenaventura Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) center was alerted to the situation and promptly notified the Colombian Navy and coast guard for assistance.
Due to rough sea conditions, a ship-to-boat transfer for the medevac was deemed unsafe. Consequently, a helicopter from the Colombian Navy was dispatched to the scene. The aircrew successfully retrieved the injured bosun and transported him to a military base in Buenaventura. Despite the rapid response, he was declared dead shortly after reaching the medical center.
Following the incident, the Cetus Narwhal returned to the port for an investigation. While the exact timing of the fall has not been disclosed, Automatic Identification System (AIS) data indicates that the vessel departed port on January 25 and returned to anchor early on January 26. As of Wednesday, the ship remained at the harbor’s entrance, awaiting further developments.
