Gunfire Erupts in Seattle’s Sinking Ship Garage

A tragic shooting incident in Seattle’s Pioneer Square left one man dead and several others injured early Sunday morning. First responders discovered the victim with a gunshot wound to the head in the notorious “Sinking Ship” parking garage. The Seattle Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which reportedly stemmed from a physical altercation.

Details of the Incident

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on February 1, Seattle police officers responded to reports of gunfire at the Sinking Ship garage located on 2nd Avenue. Upon arrival, the Seattle Fire Department pronounced one man dead at the scene, having suffered a gunshot wound to the head. In addition to the deceased, two other victims were found: a man with life-threatening injuries who was rushed to Harborview Medical Center, and a woman who sustained a graze wound from a bullet and was reported to be in stable condition.

A fourth victim later arrived at the hospital with a similar graze wound and was also deemed stable. The Seattle Police Department confirmed that a physical fight had escalated into a gunfight involving multiple individuals. As of Sunday morning, no suspects had been apprehended in connection with the shooting, although two people were arrested for causing a disturbance at the scene.

Community Response and Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Violent Crimes Tip Line at 206-233-5000, where anonymous tips are accepted. The incident has raised concerns in the community, particularly given the garage’s controversial history. Built in 1962, the Sinking Ship garage replaced the historic Seattle Hotel, leading to a preservation movement that ultimately designated Pioneer Square as Seattle’s first historic district in 1970.

Despite its contentious beginnings, the parking structure gained recognition in 2019 when Architizer named it the “coolest parking lot” in the United States. As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, reflecting on the garage’s dual legacy as both a local landmark and a site of violence.
