MOL Welcomes New LPG Dual-Fuel Carrier Energia Grandeur
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has announced the successful delivery of its latest very large gas carrier (VLGC), the Energia Grandeur. The vessel was delivered on January 29, 2023, at Mokpo Port in South Korea. This newbuilding was commissioned by MOL Energia Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of MOL, and constructed by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. The Energia Grandeur will operate under a time charter with CSSA Chartering and Shipping Services SA, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies.
The Energia Grandeur is part of MOL’s initiative to develop a fleet that primarily utilizes clean and low-impact alternative fuels. This dual-fuel vessel is capable of operating on both liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and heavy oil. By using LPG, the ship can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 20% and significantly lower sulfur oxides, particulate matter, and other pollutants by around 90% compared to traditional heavy oil. Additionally, the vessel is designed to transport ammonia, a promising next-generation clean energy source that emits no carbon dioxide during combustion.
Innovative Design and Environmental Commitment
The Energia Grandeur features a distinctive hull design that incorporates MOL’s corporate colors: “BLUE,” symbolizing the ocean, and “Turquoise,” representing the company’s environmental initiatives. This design reflects MOL’s mission to sustain lives and ensure a prosperous future through responsible maritime practices. The vessel is equipped with a shaft generator to enhance operational efficiency and further reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional LPG dual-fuel VLGCs.
MOL’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its management plan, “BLUE ACTION 2035,” which aims for net-zero emissions by 2050. The company is actively pursuing this goal through various initiatives, including the use of a transition-linked loan to finance the Energia Grandeur. This strategic approach aligns with MOL’s broader environmental vision, which emphasizes the importance of creating a decarbonized society.
TotalEnergies, a global integrated energy company, has established a strong partnership with MOL across various sectors, including marine fuel trading and long-term charter agreements for LNG carriers. The new charter agreement for the Energia Grandeur is expected to further solidify this collaboration, enhancing both companies’ efforts toward sustainable energy solutions.
