Colombia Launches First Indigenous Frigate Construction
On February 5, 2026, Colombia’s COTECMAR Shipyard marked a significant milestone by holding the first steel-cutting ceremony for the nation’s inaugural Strategic Surface Platform (PES) frigate. This ground breaking project represents a leap forward in Colombian naval engineering, as it is the first frigate to be constructed entirely within the country. The initiative aims to enhance the capabilities of the Colombian Navy while bolstering the national shipbuilding industry.

This project not only signifies a technological advancement but also aims to strengthen the local workforce. The construction of the PES frigate is expected to create approximately 1,500 direct jobs and an additional 4,000 indirect and induced jobs throughout its development. The vessel will be delivered to the Colombian Navy by 2030, marking a significant achievement in the country’s defense capabilities.

From a technical perspective, the PES frigate will utilize a modular construction strategy, featuring a hull made up of 52 naval steel blocks. The frigate will measure 107.5 meters in length, 14.02 meters in beam, and have a draft of 3.90 meters, making it the largest security and defense vessel in Colombia’s history. With this project, Colombia joins Mexico and Brazil as the only Latin American nations capable of constructing such advanced naval platforms.
