Tragedy Strikes as Migrant Boat Capsizes Near Crete

In a heartbreaking incident off the coast of Crete, Egypt has confirmed that 18 of its citizens are missing following the sinking of a migrant boat last week. The tragedy resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including three Egyptians and a Sudanese woman. The wooden vessel, which was carrying 50 people, capsized during a rescue operation after a commercial ship approached, leading to chaos among the passengers.

Details of the Incident

The distressing event unfolded late Friday when Greece’s coast guard received an alert about the migrant boat. As rescue efforts commenced, the wooden vessel, which had departed from Libya, began to capsize while passengers attempted to board the rescue ship. Eyewitness accounts suggest that a sudden movement caused the boat to overturn, leading to a desperate situation for those on board.

According to Egypt’s foreign ministry, 21 Egyptians were aboard the ill-fated boat. Of these, three bodies have been recovered, while 18 individuals remain unaccounted for. In addition to the Egyptian casualties, the body of a 28-year-old Sudanese woman was also found by the Greek coast guard. The rescue operation managed to save 20 migrants, but many others are still missing, raising concerns about the fate of those who were on the boat.

In response to the incident, Greek authorities have arrested two Sudanese men suspected of involvement in human trafficking. They are expected to face charges in court soon. This tragedy highlights the ongoing perilous journeys that migrants undertake from Libya to Crete, a significant entry point into the European Union. Last year alone, over 17,000 Egyptians made the dangerous crossing, making them the largest group of irregular migrants from Africa to Europe.

The situation remains dire as families await news of their loved ones. As authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident, the plight of migrants remains a pressing humanitarian issue that demands urgent attention and action.
