Chantier Davie Expands Operations in Texas
Chantier Davie Canada Inc., recognized as Canada’s largest shipbuilder, has made a strategic move by acquiring shipbuilding assets from Gulf Copper & Manufacturing Corporation in Galveston and Port Arthur, Texas. The deal, finalized on December 2, 2025, marks a significant step for Davie Defense, which aims to integrate itself into the U.S. shipbuilding industry. The company expressed pride in becoming an American shipbuilder and emphasized that the Texas facilities, which currently employ over 350 workers, will play a crucial role in expanding its U.S. operations.
The focus of Davie’s investment will be on constructing arctic icebreakers, a project expected to generate over 2,400 new jobs and inject $730 million into the local economy. To support this initiative, the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) has granted Davie Defense $21.7 million. Governor Abbott remarked that this historic investment will bolster American manufacturing and enhance the nation’s military readiness by producing complex vessels for both government and commercial clients.
This surge in marine defense spending aligns with an Executive Order signed by President Donald Trump in early 2025, aimed at revitalizing U.S. commercial shipbuilding capabilities. Saronic Technologies Eyes Major Investment in Brownsville
In a parallel development, Saronic Technologies Inc., a rapidly growing defense tech start-up based in Austin, is exploring a significant investment in Brownsville, Cameron County. Known for its proximity to SpaceX’s Starbase, Brownsville is being considered for Saronic’s new facility focused on drone boats for the U.S. military. The company, valued at approximately $4 billion, recently secured a $392 million contract to develop a fleet of “Corsairs” for the U.S. Navy, with nearly $200 million allocated for immediate contract work.
The Corsair is a cutting-edge 24-foot Autonomous Surface Vessel designed for surveillance and defense, capable of carrying a 1,000-pound payload over 1,000 nautical miles at speeds exceeding 35 knots. Saronic has expressed enthusiasm about partnering with the Navy to deliver advanced maritime capabilities swiftly and efficiently.

Saronic’s proposed facility, dubbed “Project Hercules,” is set to unfold in four phases across a 400-acre site, with an anticipated total investment of $3.25 billion. The project aims to create 10,000 jobs, with the first phase slated to begin construction this year and operations expected to commence in 2027. This initial phase will focus on establishing facilities for steel fabrication, welding, and hull integration, while subsequent phases are projected to be completed by 2034.
Despite the promising prospects, Saronic is also considering alternative locations for its facility, including the Bay Area of San Francisco and an existing shipyard in Louisiana. To mitigate higher property taxes in Texas, the company has submitted applications for property tax abatements in Cameron County, which will be reviewed in an upcoming public meeting. Local officials remain optimistic about securing this high-tech defense project, as the Port of Brownsville actively seeks to attract transformative investments that create quality jobs and enhance economic opportunities in the region.
