Russia Advances Construction of Ivan Rogov Assault Ship
Russia is making significant strides in the construction of the “Ivan Rogov,” a universal amphibious assault ship, at the Zaliv plant in temporarily occupied Kerch. As of March 2026, satellite imagery reveals that the flight deck and superstructure of the “Ivan Rogov” have been nearly completed. However, the bow section of the hull is still under construction. The project began in 2020, and while the ship is expected to undergo sea trials in 2027, there are doubts regarding the ability to meet this deadline. The construction process has faced challenges, particularly due to the limited capabilities of the shipyard involved.
The “Ivan Rogov” is the lead vessel of Project 23900, known as “Priboy.” It boasts impressive specifications, measuring approximately 220 meters in length and 40 meters in width, with a displacement of up to 30,000 tons. Designed for versatility, the ship can transport up to 900 marines, accommodate 75 units of equipment, and deploy three landing craft. Additionally, it is equipped to carry an air group of 15 helicopters, including Ka-52 and Ka-29 models.
Strategic Importance and Future Plans
Russia intends to construct two ships under this project; however, work is currently focused on the “Ivan Rogov” due to the shipyard’s limited resources. The project holds strategic significance for Russia, despite potential risks to infrastructure in occupied Crimea.
