Navantia and TKMS Forge Submarine Partnership
Spain’s Navantia and Germany’s thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) have entered into a memorandum of understanding aimed at enhancing shipbuilding capabilities for submarine projects across Europe and NATO. This collaboration seeks to streamline production processes, reduce costs, and accelerate delivery timelines. Both companies will engage in management-level discussions to ensure compliance with competition and export regulations while leveraging TKMS’s submarine designs at Navantia’s facilities in Spain.
Strengthening European Defense Capabilities
The partnership between Navantia and TKMS is a strategic move to address the increasing demand for advanced naval capabilities among European militaries. As global threats evolve, the need for robust defense systems becomes more pressing. The agreement emphasizes the importance of industrial cooperation, allowing both firms to combine their expertise and resources effectively. TKMS has a long-standing reputation as a leader in non-nuclear submarine technology, and its collaboration with Navantia aims to uphold high-quality standards while ensuring timely delivery to clients.
Ricardo Domínguez, executive chairman of Navantia, highlighted the significance of this partnership for Europe’s defense autonomy. He stated, “This collaboration will deliver cutting-edge capabilities to our armed forces while leveraging the full potential of European defense investment.” The two companies are committed to contributing to a unified European defense strategy, which is crucial in today’s geopolitical landscape.
Current and Future Projects
Navantia is actively constructing up to six S-80 Isaac Peral-class submarines for the Spanish Navy, showcasing its commitment to enhancing national defense. Meanwhile, TKMS is engaged in producing up to 15 submarines for both the German and Norwegian navies. The collaboration is expected to bolster these ongoing projects and potentially lead to new opportunities in the international market.
In 2025, TKMS was recognized as a finalist, alongside South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean, for a contract to deliver up to 12 next-generation diesel-electric submarines to replace the Royal Canadian Navy’s aging Victoria-class submarines. Additionally, the company secured a contract to build six advanced conventional submarines for the Indian Navy and partnered with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri to propose the U212 Near Future Submarine for the Philippine Navy. These projects underline the growing influence and capabilities of both Navantia and TKMS in the global defense sector.
