Gulfport Unveils Major Development Projects
GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) — Gulfport is experiencing a surge in development, with several new hotels and a significant downtown project taking shape. Mayor Hugh Keating announced the transformation of the town center project into Channel South, which will feature a Marriott Tribute Hotel, upscale apartments, and retail spaces. This ambitious initiative aims to enhance the city’s appeal and economic prospects.
Channel South: A New Downtown Landmark
Mayor Keating highlighted the ongoing downtown project at the intersection of Highway 90 and Highway 49, now known as Channel South. This name pays homage to the Gulfport Ship Channel and the city’s southern location. The development will include a Marriott Tribute Hotel boasting over 110 rooms and a five-star restaurant, alongside plans for 200 upscale apartments and retail spaces. A crucial component of this project is a parking garage, which Keating described as the “linchpin” of the entire development. He emphasized that without it, the project would not have progressed as planned.
New Play Area Construction Begins in Downtown Grand Junction
In addition to Channel South, Gulfport is also witnessing the construction of two hotels along the beach. A Holiday Inn at DeBuys Road and Highway 90 is set to open within the next 18 months, while a Hampton Inn at Courthouse Road and Highway 90 is expected to welcome guests in three to six months. Furthermore, the Markham Hotel is gearing up for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 23, with Lodging & Leisure overseeing its revitalization and renovation. Mayor Keating expressed pride in the community’s efforts, stating, “The whole community is going to be very proud of what they’ve done. I mean, it’s first class.”
New Sportsplex and Community Initiatives
In a separate development, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for a new sportsplex at the Isiah Fredericks Community Center in North Gulfport. This facility features a full-size football field equipped with goalposts and lights, as well as tennis courts, pickleball courts, basketball courts, a splash pad, a running track, and playground equipment. Mayor Keating noted that this sportsplex is a vital addition to the North Gulfport community and the surrounding areas.
Additionally, Gulfport is launching a clean and green initiative aimed at fostering community engagement through weekend cleanup efforts. Keating emphasized the importance of aesthetics in attracting economic development, stating that first impressions significantly influence decision-making. “If you’re not aesthetically pleasing, you’re not going to be able to check that box on the front end,” he remarked. This initiative aims to enhance the city’s visual appeal and support its ongoing development efforts.
