Bureau Veritas Grants Approval in Principle for OceanSTAR’s FPSO Hull
Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to OceanSTAR Engineering Holdings Sdn. Bhd. for its innovative Suezmax-sized Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) hull, named OS Elite 800. This significant approval, which includes a thorough basic design assessment, aims to standardize FPSO solutions, thereby accelerating project delivery and minimizing development risks in the offshore sector. The approval was announced recently, marking a pivotal moment for both companies as they advance their commitment to enhancing offshore operations.
The OS Elite 800 is designed specifically for deployment in the waters of Southeast Asia. Its generic Suezmax-sized hull offers adaptability for various mooring configurations, including external turret and spread mooring. This flexibility allows the FPSO to be effectively utilized across different field layouts and environmental conditions. The design also accommodates topside process facilities with a total weight capacity of up to 20,000 metric tons, making it suitable for oil and gas production activities.
Design Features and Compliance Standards
The FPSO concept features a conventional ship-shaped hull, which includes dedicated cargo storage and integrated marine systems for efficient cargo handling, ballast management, and oil transfer operations. The design assessment conducted by BV adheres to the BV Rules for the Classification of Offshore Units (NR445) and relevant international standards. This rigorous evaluation ensures that the OS Elite 800 aligns with essential structural integrity and safety operation requirements from the early stages of development.
The assessment process encompassed a comprehensive review of various critical factors, including intact and damaged stability, freeboard, and basic structural scantlings. Additionally, BV conducted a thorough examination of load lists and single-line diagrams to confirm the reliability of the FPSO’s electrical generation and distribution systems. These evaluations are crucial for ensuring the safety and efficiency of the FPSO during its operational lifespan.
Industry Collaboration and Future Prospects
David Wu, CEO and President of OceanSTAR, expressed enthusiasm about the approval, highlighting the significance of this milestone. He stated, “We are delighted to mark the launch of BV’s Offshore Centre of Excellence with the award of an Approval in Principle for OceanSTAR’s Generic FPSO hull — a milestone that reflects both our shared commitment to innovation and the strength of our technical collaboration.” Wu emphasized the importance of this partnership as the Sepat project commences, indicating a strong foundation for future collaboration that leverages both global expertise and regional presence.
The approval of the OS Elite 800 hull not only signifies a step forward for OceanSTAR but also represents a broader trend in the offshore industry towards more standardized and efficient solutions. As the demand for offshore oil and gas production continues to grow, innovations like the OS Elite 800 will play a crucial role in meeting industry needs while ensuring safety and operational integrity.
