CMA CGM GRAND PALAIS Makes Historic Suez Canal Debut

The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) announced a significant milestone on Sunday as the CMA CGM GRAND PALAIS, the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container ship, successfully completed its maiden transit through the canal. Operated by the French shipping line CMA CGM, the vessel arrived from Singapore and is en route to Malta, marking a new chapter in maritime logistics. This transit underscores the canal’s capability to accommodate the latest and largest vessels in global shipping.

Significance of the Maiden Voyage

Chairperson of the SCA, Osama Rabie, highlighted that the successful crossing of the CMA CGM GRAND PALAIS serves as a testament to the canal’s operational capacity and reliability. Measuring 400 meters in length and 61 meters in width, the mega-ship boasts a capacity of 23,876 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) and a tonnage of 240,000 tonnes. Rabie emphasized that this achievement not only reflects the canal’s status as a safe maritime route but also aligns with international environmental standards set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). The transit is expected to provide fuel savings by reducing travel distances compared to alternative routes.

Despite facing regional challenges, Rabie assured that the SCA maintains a strong partnership with CMA CGM, which continues to utilize the canal as a preferred shipping route. Following protocol for first-time transits, SCA Chief Pilots welcomed the ship’s crew and presented a commemorative souvenir to Captain Liang Zhihua, the ship’s master. Captain Liang praised the SCA pilots for their expertise, noting that navigating such large vessels requires exceptional skill and cooperation.

Expansion of Suez Canal Economic Zone

In a separate development, the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) welcomed the cruise ship CRYSTAL SERENITY at Sokhna Port. Arriving from Mumbai, India, the vessel is set to embark approximately 400 tourists, joining a crew of up to 520 personnel. The ship is scheduled to dock at the SCZone’s West Port Said later this week to pick up an additional 200 tourists, bringing the total onboard to over 1,100 individuals.

Successful Refloating of Bulk Carrier in Suez Canal

SCZone Chairperson Walid Gamal El-Din expressed the authority’s commitment to enhancing various sectors through its ports and industrial zones. He noted that the development of Sokhna Port has significantly improved its readiness to serve industrial, commercial, logistical, and tourism needs. El-Din also highlighted the port’s recent achievement of entering the Guinness World Records for the deepest man-made port basin globally, at a depth of 19 meters. This accomplishment positions Sokhna as a crucial Red Sea port, linking Africa to global markets while ensuring the safety and security of tourists.

Additionally, the SCA is expanding its maritime capabilities with the upcoming addition of the integrated petroleum supply and services ship, Fakhr 1, to its fleet. Recently completed in China, the Fakhr 1 is designed with advanced technology for fuel-efficient operations and is equipped for diving activities. Rabie noted that this new vessel will enhance the SCA’s efforts to diversify income sources and contribute to gas and oil exploration, reinforcing the authority’s commitment to modernizing its fleet.
