KMEW Expands Maritime Footprint with New Shipyard

Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Ltd (KMEW) has announced the acquisition of approximately 15 acres of prime waterfront land in Saphale, Palghar, Maharashtra, through its subsidiary, Knowledge Shipyard Pvt Ltd. This strategic move, which includes an option for an additional 5 acres, aims to establish a state-of-the-art shipyard that will enhance the company’s capabilities in commercial shipbuilding and maritime infrastructure.

Strategic Location and Development Plans

The newly acquired site, situated along the Vaitarna River and in proximity to the upcoming Vadhvan Port, offers significant advantages for maritime operations. With around 188 meters of waterfront access and a natural slipway featuring an estimated 6-meter high-tide draft, the location is well-suited for vessel movement and construction. KMEW plans to develop the shipyard in phases, starting with specialized workboats and tugs in Phase I, followed by integrated repair facilities and floating dry docks in Phase II, and culminating in large-scale vessel production in Phase III.

The proposed shipyard will encompass a range of facilities, including hull fabrication, mechanical and electrical workshops, and integrated power systems. Additionally, the site will feature material-handling infrastructure and automation-ready utilities. KMEW is committed to sustainability, incorporating sewage treatment systems, structured waste management, and energy optimization measures into the facility’s design. This comprehensive approach will ensure end-to-end capabilities for vessel construction, repair, and lifecycle support.

Alignment with National Initiatives

KMEW’s shipyard development aligns with several government initiatives aimed at bolstering domestic shipbuilding. These include the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy, the Green Tug Transition Programme, and the Maritime India Vision 2030. By investing in this new facility, KMEW not only enhances its operational capacity but also contributes to the broader goal of increasing domestic shipbuilding demand.

The company’s Chief Executive, Sujay Kewalramani, emphasized the importance of a phased expansion strategy, which reflects a carefully sequenced journey toward achieving comprehensive maritime capabilities. The shipyard will also provide essential administrative and workforce infrastructure, including digital office spaces, training facilities, on-site accommodation, and logistics systems, ensuring a robust support framework for its operations.

As KMEW moves forward with this ambitious project, it is poised to play a significant role in the growth of India’s maritime industry, fostering innovation and sustainability in shipbuilding practices.
