HD KSOE, Siemens sign agreement on adoption of AI platform for shipbuilding
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. (HD KSOE) announced on Friday a significant agreement with a Siemens business unit to implement an artificial intelligence (AI) platform for shipbuilding. This collaboration represents a crucial step in HD KSOE’s journey towards establishing an AI-driven shipyard and advancing the digital transformation within the shipbuilding sector.

The groundbreaking marine platform, developed in partnership by HD KSOE and Siemens Digital Industries Software, is set to revolutionize the shipbuilding landscape. This platform aims to create an autonomous manufacturing system that seamlessly integrates the entire shipbuilding process, spanning from vessel design and production to supply chain management and maintenance, as highlighted in a press release by HD KSOE.
Future-Ready Model for Shipbuilding Industry
Kim Hyung-kwan, President and CEO of HD KSOE, emphasized, “By incorporating AI, digital twin, and automation technologies into a connected digital shipyard environment, our goal is to establish a future-ready model for the shipbuilding industry.” Through this innovative platform, shipyards will have the capability to transmit design modifications and real-time production updates directly to the shop floor and throughout the supply chain. This will enable quicker, more informed decision-making processes, ultimately aiding in the prevention of schedule delays and quality issues, as stated by the company.
The signing ceremony for this pivotal agreement took place in Washington on Thursday, during the opening ceremony of the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Center (KUSPC). This platform aims to advance the “Make American Shipbuilding Great Again” (MASGA) initiative, which seeks to revitalize the U.S. shipbuilding industry. As part of this initiative, Seoul has committed to investing US$150 billion to support the revival of the U.S. shipbuilding sector, forming part of a broader investment commitment of $350 billion to the United States.
