KUSPC Launches to Back U.S. Shipbuilding Revival
An outpost to lead the revival of the United States shipbuilding industry based on South Korea’s advanced shipbuilding technology has been established.
Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Cooperation Center Inaugurated
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held the opening ceremony of the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Cooperation Center (KUSPC) in Washington, D.C. on July 23. The event was attended by around 130 officials from both countries, including Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jeong-gwan and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. The center will play a crucial role in the MASGA project, a rebuilding initiative for the U.S. shipbuilding industry.
Promoting Industry Collaboration and Investment
During the center’s inauguration, the governments, companies, and research institutes of both countries signed a total of 15 memorandums of understanding. These agreements aim to strengthen the foundation of the shipbuilding industry in the U.S. and support South Korean companies’ investment projects in the U.S. The partnership between the two nations includes a substantial investment of $150 billion in the shipbuilding sector out of a larger $350 billion investment in the U.S.
KUSPC will implement practical industrial upgrading programs locally with budget support from the South Korean government. It plans to offer consulting services to enhance the productivity of U.S. shipyards and conduct professional workforce training programs. Additionally, the center will facilitate various cooperation projects between companies from both countries, including research and development, technology exchange, and direct investment.
Enhancing Local Network Function
Another core mission of the center is to strengthen the local network function. It will establish a communication channel with the U.S. government, Congress, and local companies to assist domestic companies looking to enter the U.S. shipbuilding market.
Minister Kim Jeong-gwan highlighted the significance of KUSPC as a platform for unprecedented cooperation in the global shipbuilding sector. He emphasized that the center symbolizes South Korea’s commitment to assisting in rebuilding the U.S. shipbuilding industry and promoting South Korea’s shipbuilding technology along the U.S. coastal belt.
The government plans to closely monitor market conditions and implement support measures to ensure South Korean companies achieve significant order results in the future.
Overall, the establishment of the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Cooperation Center marks a significant milestone in strengthening the competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry, benefiting both nations and ensuring economic security.
