EU boosts maritime manufacturing with Industrial Maritime Value Chains Alliance
On 2 September, the European Commission introduced the EU Industrial Maritime Value Chains Alliance, in line with the European Industrial Maritime Strategy recently adopted. This initiative aims to bolster Europe’s maritime industrial and technological sovereignty, backing economic security, strategic autonomy, supply chains, defense readiness, and the clean and digital transitions. The alliance will unite maritime manufacturers, shipowners, EU Member States and regions, investors, and social partners.
Facilitating European Maritime Manufacturing
The EU Industrial Maritime Value Chains Alliance, aligned with the EU industrial maritime strategy, is set to facilitate several key objectives to enhance the European maritime industry:
- Mapping and monitoring supply and demand drivers and barriers in identified lead markets.
- Fostering collaboration to pave the way for scaling up manufacturing and deployment, including through actionable plans in identified segments.
- Building up pipelines of strategic projects to strengthen European maritime value chains and uphold the EU’s strategic interests.
Focus on Expansion and Collaboration
The alliance will concentrate on identified lead markets and technologies with the potential to expand European maritime manufacturing capacity while catering to the requirements of shipping, ports, and other maritime sectors. It aims to support the development of business cases for scaling production and deployment, attract targeted investments, and encourage public-private cooperation and industrial collaboration. Additionally, it will address market, trade, and competitiveness challenges through joint actions and concrete projects.
Call for Stakeholder Applications
The Commission has initiated a call for applications for eligible stakeholders interested in joining the alliance. The call will remain open continuously, with the first cut-off deadline scheduled for 16 October 2026. Stakeholders from various sectors are encouraged to participate in this alliance to contribute to the growth and sustainability of the European maritime industry.
By establishing the EU Industrial Maritime Value Chains Alliance, the European Commission is taking proactive steps to strengthen the maritime industry, promote collaboration, and secure Europe’s position in the global maritime market. This initiative underscores the commitment to fostering innovation, competitiveness, and sustainability within the European maritime sector.
