Future Technologies Including Carbon-Free Transport Unveiled as Korea’s Three Shipbuilders

South Korea’s top three shipbuilders, HD Hyundai, Hanwha Ocean, and Samsung Heavy Industries, are gearing up to present their cutting-edge ship and equipment technologies at the upcoming Gastech 2026 exhibition in Bangkok, Thailand. The event, scheduled from the 14th to the 17th at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC), is renowned as the world’s largest exhibition in the natural gas and LNG industry, focusing on low-carbon solutions, hydrogen, shipping, offshore industries, and AI.
HD Hyundai’s Impressive Lineup
HD Hyundai will be showcasing its prowess in the gas industry with an integrated booth featuring HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HDKSOE), HD Hyundai Marine Solution, and HD Hyundai Electric. The company will spotlight five model types, including LNG carriers, FSRUs, VLGCs, LNG bunkering vessels, and LCO2 carriers. Additionally, researchers from HDKSOE will delve into topics such as hydrogen maritime transportation, ammonia safety, and physics-based digital twins.
Hanwha Ocean’s Carbon-Free LNG Carrier
Hanwha Ocean is set to unveil a model of a 174,000-cubic-meter-class carbon-free LNG carrier, powered by an innovative ammonia gas turbine propulsion system. This vessel represents a significant leap towards fully carbon-free technology, eliminating the need for pilot oil ignition.
Samsung Heavy Industries’ Future Energy Solutions
Samsung Heavy Industries will be focusing on next-generation LNG value-chain technologies, particularly FLNGs, aimed at securing a strong foothold in the future energy transportation market. The company’s recent success in securing a large FLNG contract underscores its commitment to innovation and growth in the offshore plant market.
The presence of top executives, including Kisun Chung, Chairman of HD Hyundai, and Choi Sung-an, Vice Chairman of Samsung Heavy Industries, is expected to further elevate the event. These industry leaders are anticipated to engage with global customers, shipping companies, and classification societies to discuss potential cooperation plans and eco-friendly ship initiatives.
As the event shifts its focus to Southeast Asia this year, industry insiders predict lively discussions and collaborations targeting the region’s growing demand for advanced gas industry solutions. Stay tuned for more updates as Gastech 2026 unfolds.
