DNV and GRSE sign advanced shipbuilding MoU
At the recent SMM trade fair in Hamburg, DNV and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to embark on a new strategic partnership focusing on advanced shipbuilding, digitalization, green technologies, and competence development. The collaboration aims to bolster the growth of India’s maritime and defense sectors.
Supporting Growth in Maritime and Defense Sectors
Under this agreement, DNV will extend its support to GRSE by providing classification and technical guidance on naval, defense, and specialized vessels. Additionally, DNV will offer regulatory insights on evolving maritime regulations and international naval standards. The collaboration will encompass various aspects including modular construction, design optimization, and the development of cutting-edge vessels like autonomous platforms, next-generation offshore patrol vessels, and polar research vessels. Moreover, DNV will offer advisory assistance to enhance GRSE’s repair and refit infrastructure to cater to both domestic and international naval clients.
Focus on Green Technologies and Innovation
Furthermore, the partnership between DNV and GRSE will delve into the development of electric and hybrid propulsion ferries, low-carbon naval auxiliary vessels, and exploration of alternative fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia. The agreement will also include assessments of lifecycle emissions and support for compliance with Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and other international environmental standards.
Empowering Innovation and Sustainability
Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, DNV CEO, highlighted the importance of innovation and capabilities development in the face of geopolitical tensions and market uncertainties. He emphasized the opportunities that arise for innovation in the maritime industry and expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with GRSE to enhance shipbuilding design, processes, and systems. Cmde P R Hari, Chairman and Managing Director of GRSE, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the partnership’s focus on innovation, sustainability, and global excellence to strengthen India’s maritime and defense ecosystem.
DNV will also bring its expertise in areas such as AI-enabled ship design, digital twins, and cybersecurity to the table. Joint training programs will be conducted for GRSE professionals, Indian naval architects, and surveyors to bolster India’s maritime supply chain and enhance capacity, particularly within the Eastern Indian maritime cluster.
