Damen Shipyards Group Unveils New CFe 1100 Container Feeder Design

Damen Shipyards Group, a renowned shipbuilding company, has recently introduced a cutting-edge 1,100 TEU container feeder design known as the CFe 1100. This innovative vessel, unveiled on September 8, 2026, is specifically tailored for regional and international feeder operations. The introduction of the CFe 1100 marks a significant milestone in Damen’s existing CFe 800 series and broader cargo vessel portfolio.
Fuel-Efficient Hybrid Technology for Sustainable Operations
The CFe 1100 is equipped with a fuel-efficient hull design and advanced hybrid technology, setting the stage for future methanol and battery propulsion systems. Notably, the vessel features a hybrid power take-off/power take-in (PTO/PTI) system as a standard offering. In PTO mode, the main engine generates electricity for onboard consumers, potentially reducing the reliance on auxiliary generator sets. The PTI function provides an electric boost for higher speeds and enhanced maneuverability while maintaining optimal fuel efficiency.
Future-Ready Design for Methanol Propulsion and Battery Integration
Damen has meticulously designed the CFe 1100 with the foresight of potential future conversion to methanol propulsion. The vessel’s engine room and aft cargo hold are strategically configured to accommodate a methanol tank, with the fuel preparation arrangement set to be verified by the classification society DNV. Additionally, a dedicated battery room has been incorporated to facilitate seamless integration of battery propulsion alongside methanol systems.
Innovative Features Enhance Operational Efficiency
Optional features available for the CFe 1100 include the Damen Air Cavity System (DACS), which minimizes hull resistance by creating an air layer underneath, as well as provisions for shore power, the Damen Duct, pre-swirl fins, and optimized flow around the propeller and rudder. The vessel’s cargo holds are equipped with fixed cell guides for various container sizes, and the deck layout is optimized for efficient stowage of containers. Hydraulically operated pivoting hatch covers further expedite cargo handling operations.
Enhanced Manoeuvrability and Ice-Class Capabilities
For port operations, the CFe 1100 is equipped with a flap rudder and bow thruster, with the option of an additional stern thruster for enhanced maneuverability. The vessel boasts 1A Finnish-Swedish ice-class capability, enabling it to operate in first-year ice conditions of up to one meter thickness. The vessel’s aft accommodation layout and homogeneous loading capacity of 14 tonnes per TEU underscore its operational flexibility and efficiency.
Nard Brandsma, Manager of Design at Damen Cargo Vessels, expressed confidence in the CFe 1100’s ability to elevate feeder operations with its innovative design features. While the vessel is introduced as a market-ready design, Damen has not yet announced any initial customer or construction orders for the CFe 1100.
