HMM Orders 2+2 MR Product Tankers from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries

South Korean shipping broker Bancosta has reported that South Korean shipowner HMM has placed an order with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for 2+2 50,000 DWT MR product tankers. Each vessel is priced at $52 million, making the total value of the four new vessels approximately $208 million if the option is exercised.

Expanding Fleet with Multiple Shipyard Orders

HMM has been actively expanding its fleet this year with orders from various shipyards under the HD Hyundai Group. In addition to the recent order for MR product tankers, HMM has also ordered 10 2,800-TEU container ships from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and 2 90,000-cubic-meter LPG dual-fuel VLGCs from HD Hyundai Samho. The deliveries for these new vessels are scheduled to commence in 2028.

Apart from South Korean shipyards, HMM has placed orders for more than 10 new vessels at Chinese shipyards in the first half of this year. These orders include 2,000-TEU and 3,000-TEU container ships from Huanghai Shipbuilding, as well as eight Newcastlemax bulk carriers from an undisclosed shipyard.

Strategic Investment for Future Growth

HMM, as South Korea’s leading shipping company, has significantly increased its vessel acquisitions this year, spending 2.2577 trillion won in the first half of the year. This marks a 245% increase compared to the same period last year, reflecting the company’s commitment to expanding its fleet and enhancing its capabilities.

The substantial investment in vessels is part of HMM’s medium- to long-term growth strategy, aiming to invest approximately 29 trillion won in its fleet, ports, and logistics infrastructure by 2030. The company plans to increase its container fleet from 73 vessels to 166 and its bulk carrier fleet from 50 to 110 as part of this strategic expansion.

With 45 new vessels currently under construction as of June 2026, totaling approximately 1.8779 trillion won in construction costs, HMM is poised for further growth and development in the global shipping industry.
