Cochin Shipyard, DP World arm to develop and run Kochi ship repair facility
Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and Drydocks World, a DP World company, have announced a collaboration to jointly operate and expand the International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF) in Kochi. The agreement was formalized at the sidelines of the BRICS Summit 2026 in the national capital.
Expanding Capacity for Ship Repair
During the event, Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, emphasized the goal of operating, consolidating, and expanding the international ship repair facility in Kochi to meet regional and global demands. Sonowal mentioned plans to increase the facility’s capacity to repair over 80 vessels annually in the initial stages, with a future expansion from six workstations to 16.
The minister also highlighted that India aims to boost its shipbuilding industry significantly, with five shipbuilding clusters already receiving in-principle approvals. The country’s ambition is to rank among the top 10 shipbuilding nations by 2030 and in the top five by 2047.
Promising Prospects for the Industry
Shipping Secretary Vijay Kumar expressed optimism regarding the CSL-Dry Docks collaboration, suggesting that its success could pave the way for similar models in other projects. He noted that several international players have already shown interest in India’s shipbuilding sector, with companies like HD Hyundai from Korea, Fincantieri from Italy, and IHC from the Netherlands exploring opportunities in the market.
The partnership between CSL and Drydocks World marks a significant milestone as the first public-private partnership in India’s ship repair sector under the newly established entity, Cochin Dubai International Ship Repair Facility. The joint venture aims to enhance the ISRF’s capacity to serve a broader range of vessels for Indian, regional, and international clients, with each partner holding a 50% stake in the venture.
This collaboration builds upon a memorandum of understanding signed during India Maritime Week 2025, highlighting the commitment to exploring cooperation in ship repair and allied maritime services. The development is expected to bring substantial growth and opportunities to India’s maritime industry, setting the stage for enhanced capabilities and global competitiveness.
