HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Commercializes Breakthrough Cargo Containment Design
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has made waves in the maritime industry by commercializing a cutting-edge three-tank cargo containment system for liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. This innovative design marks a departure from the traditional four-tank systems, setting a new standard for efficiency and sustainability in LNG transportation.
Enhanced Capacity and Efficiency
The three-tank system, developed in collaboration with French firm GTT and Norwegian classification society DNV, offers a significant increase in cargo capacity without altering the vessel’s overall size. By reducing the space between cargo tanks, HHI has managed to boost LNG capacity from approximately 174,000 cubic meters to a remarkable 176,800 cubic meters. This design not only improves transport efficiency but also eliminates the berthing constraints associated with larger vessels, making it a game-changer for shipowners.
Cost-Effective and Eco-Friendly Operation
One of the key advantages of the three-tank system is its ability to lower transport costs and minimize emissions. By removing an insulated bulkhead from the conventional 174,000-m³-class LNG carrier, HHI has created an additional 2,800 cubic meters of space, allowing for more cargo per voyage. This increased capacity translates to lower Unit Freight Costs and higher returns for shipowners.
Furthermore, the streamlined cargo containment system reduces heat transfer into the tanks, resulting in a lower daily Boil-Off Rate (BOR) of 0.08%. Compared to the four-tank configuration, this represents a 6% reduction in energy consumption for reliquefaction, improving overall operational efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, the strengthened structure and insulation system of the vessels address concerns about sloshing in larger tanks, ensuring safe operations even under partial-load conditions.
HHI showcased its groundbreaking three-tank LNG carrier technology at a technical seminar hosted by GTT during Gastech 2026, a leading gas industry exhibition in Bangkok, Thailand. During the event, Hong-ryul Ryu, Chief Technology Officer at HHI, underscored the technical prowess and strategic significance of the three-tank system in the evolving low-carbon shipping market.
