ABS Awards Hanwha Ocean AIP for Multi-Purpose Fuel Tank and FGSS Design
Hanwha Ocean has achieved a significant milestone in the maritime industry as ABS, a leading classification society, has granted Hanwha Ocean approval in principle (AIP) for a groundbreaking multi-purpose fuel tank and fuel gas supply system. This innovative system allows an LNG carrier to seamlessly transition from LNG to ammonia fuel without the need for replacing the fuel tank or fuel supply system.
Fuel Flexibility for Electrically Propelled LNG Carrier
The AIP was officially awarded to Hanwha Ocean at Gastech 2026 and specifically covers the fuel tank and integrated fuel gas supply system designed for an electrically propelled LNG carrier powered by a gas turbine. This system is engineered to supply both LNG and ammonia to the gas turbine, enabling a smooth transition between the two fuels. ABS meticulously reviewed the design in accordance with relevant class and international requirements, ensuring its compliance and safety standards.
ABS Senior Vice President, Global Engineering, Gareth Burton highlighted the importance of fuel flexibility in today’s regulatory landscape, emphasizing the engineering feat achieved by Hanwha Ocean in designing a system that allows for seamless fuel transitions without the need for tank replacement. Continued Collaboration for Sustainable Shipping Solutions
This recent approval marks the latest collaboration between ABS and Hanwha Ocean, following previous successful projects such as the AIP for an ammonia gas turbine propulsion system in 2023 and a gas dispersion study for a 174,000 CBM LNG carrier with an ammonia gas turbine in 2024. Young Chang (James) Shon, the Chief Technology Officer of Hanwha Ocean, expressed optimism about the future of sustainable shipping, highlighting the importance of Hanwha Ocean’s multi-purpose fuel design in providing shipowners with a practical and flexible pathway towards achieving net-zero emissions while maintaining long-term competitiveness in the industry.
