An Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was recently signed between NSHIP-AP, the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board, and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in the presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu. This agreement signifies a convergence of the maritime development visions of the Government of India and the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
Major Investment and Employment Opportunities
The proposed project involves an investment of ₹29,253 crore for establishing an integrated shipbuilding cluster at Dugarajapatnam. It is anticipated to create around 45,000 direct and indirect job opportunities, fostering a comprehensive maritime industrial ecosystem that includes shipbuilding, marine engineering, ancillary manufacturing, logistics, and allied services.
Supporting India’s Maritime Development Goals
Aligned with the Government of India’s initiatives to bolster domestic shipbuilding capacities and elevate India’s standing in the global maritime sector, the Dugarajapatnam project complements the objectives of the Shipbuilding Development Scheme, National Shipbuilding Mission, and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. These efforts aim to cultivate a competitive and globally integrated Indian shipbuilding ecosystem.
The proposed cluster is poised to facilitate increased industrial engagement throughout the maritime value chain, fostering the growth of specialized manufacturing capabilities, maritime engineering proficiency, and logistics infrastructure.
With the collaborative efforts of the Andhra Pradesh Government and the leadership of Shri Jasmeet Singh Bindra, IRTS, Chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Authority, the Dugarajapatnam initiative signifies a crucial milestone in the state’s maritime development trajectory.
The envisioned greenfield shipyard and integrated cluster have the potential to enhance Andhra Pradesh’s role in India’s evolving shipbuilding landscape, contributing to job creation, industrial advancement, and the nation’s enduring maritime aspirations.
