DGMA, IIT Bombay and IIFCL projects sign agreement to support shipyard
In a significant move to bolster India’s domestic shipbuilding capabilities, a Tripartite Project Agreement was recently signed at IIT Bombay. The agreement, signed on September 17, 2026, marks a crucial milestone in the Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS) and paves the way for enhancing the country’s shipyard infrastructure.
Establishment of Project Management Unit to Drive Modernisation
The agreement, involving the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA), IIT Bombay, and IIFCL Projects Ltd., establishes a dedicated Project Management Unit (PMU). This unit will be responsible for supporting the appraisal, monitoring, compliance management, and implementation of shipyard modernisation projects under the Brownfield Capacity Expansion component of the SbDS.
The presence of senior officials from the three institutions during the formal exchange of the agreement highlighted the commitment to this collaborative effort. DGMA, IIT Bombay, and IIFCL Projects Ltd. were represented by key individuals, emphasizing the importance of the initiative.
Creating a More Competitive Shipbuilding Industry
The newly established PMU is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring the effective implementation of shipyard modernisation projects. By facilitating systematic project appraisal, monitoring progress, ensuring compliance, and supporting coordination among stakeholders, the PMU aims to drive the modernisation of existing shipyard infrastructure and expand the shipbuilding capacity in India.
This collaborative effort aligns with the broader objectives of the Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. It envisions a stronger, more self-reliant, and globally competitive Indian maritime sector, paving the way for technological advancements and enhanced domestic capacity in the years ahead.
