Mitsubishi Heavy to Invest 100 Bil. Yen to Ramp up Shipbuilding Capacity

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. has announced a significant investment of 100 billion yen ($634 million) to expand its shipbuilding capacity in response to expected growth in demand. This decision comes after the Japanese government included the shipbuilding business in 17 strategic sectors.

Expansion Plans on Choshu Dejima in 2030

The company has acquired a site on an artificial island from the city government of Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, to facilitate the transfer of some operations from its Shimonoseki shipyard. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., a fully-owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, will commence the setup of facilities on Choshu Dejima in western Japan in 2027, with operations scheduled to begin in 2030.

Government Support for Strategic Sector Development

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has initiated new measures to ensure the stable supply of critical products and enhance Japan’s national security. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism has approved the project, with up to 40 billion yen of the total investment expected to be covered by government subsidies.

This significant investment by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries reflects a strategic move to capitalize on the growing demand in the shipbuilding sector and align with the government’s focus on strengthening national security through the development of critical industries.
