Greece’s Contships Orders Up to 30 Feeder Boxships at China’s Guangji Green
Contships Logistics, a Greek feeder container ship owner led by Nikolas Pateras, has recently announced a significant fleet renewal program. The company plans to construct up to 30 feeder container ships and has already signed a letter of intent (LOI) with a renowned Chinese shipyard.
Partnership with Guangji Green Energy Shipbuilding
On October 1, CLC Newbuildings—a subsidiary of Contships Logistics—inked an LOI with Guangji Green Energy Shipbuilding for the construction of 1,300 TEU-class feeder container ships. The agreement includes a firm order for 10 vessels with options for two additional batches of 10 ships each. While specific details regarding delivery timelines and costs remain undisclosed, industry insiders estimate the total value of this order to surpass $800 million.
Innovative Vessel Design and Features
The container ships to be built are based on the cutting-edge “ContshipMax CV1300” design, a collaborative effort between Contships and the Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute (SDARI). With a maximum capacity of 1,324 TEU and 340 reefer plugs, these vessels offer enhanced operational flexibility, superior fuel efficiency, and improved emission performance. Their hull dimensions have been meticulously optimized to cater to the global feeder container shipping market.
Equipped with various eco-friendly technologies, including a Mitsubishi Tier III main engine, advanced low-pressure Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, shaft generator, and energy-saving devices, these ships aim to provide a modern, highly efficient platform that balances reliability and reduced environmental impact. This move aligns with the industry’s escalating demands for sustainable shipping solutions.
The announcement of this fleet renewal initiative underscores Contships Logistics’ commitment to investing in state-of-the-art tonnage for the global container feeder shipping industry. If the LOI is converted into a firm contract, it will mark the largest international shipbuilding agreement secured by Guangji Green Energy Shipbuilding thus far.
Apart from the collaboration with Contships Logistics, Guangji Green Energy Shipbuilding has also secured various international orders this year, including vessels for companies in Singapore, Norway, Dubai, and France. This strategic partnership highlights the growing importance of eco-friendly and efficient shipping solutions in the maritime sector.
