South Korea to foster AI-led transformation of shipbuilding industry

In a recent official statement released on October 12, 2026, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Resources of South Korea announced a significant initiative to promote the adoption of artificial intelligence in the country’s shipbuilding industry. The ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, held a meeting to discuss strategies aimed at enhancing the use of AI technologies in one of South Korea’s core export sectors.

Government’s Investment Plans

During the meeting, the government revealed plans to invest a total of 1.4 trillion won, equivalent to $1.05 billion, in public and private funds over the next five years. This investment will be directed towards three flagship AI-led shipbuilding-transformation projects, with the goal of modernizing and revolutionizing the industry through the integration of advanced technologies.

Roadmap for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships

Additionally, as part of its efforts to drive innovation in the maritime sector, the government unveiled the inaugural Basic Plans to Promote the Development and Commercialization of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships. This 10-year roadmap is a requirement mandated under the Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships Act, which came into effect earlier this year. The plans outline a comprehensive strategy to support the development and deployment of autonomous surface ships, marking a significant step towards the future of maritime transportation.

The South Korean government’s bold initiatives reflect its commitment to advancing the country’s shipbuilding industry through the strategic incorporation of artificial intelligence and autonomous technologies. By leveraging these cutting-edge innovations, South Korea aims to maintain its position as a global leader in shipbuilding and drive sustainable growth in the sector.

Overall, the government’s proactive approach towards embracing AI and autonomous technologies in shipbuilding underscores its vision for a more efficient, competitive, and technologically-driven industry landscape in the years to come.
