Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Wins Contract for “Offshore Floating Island”

Shanghai Jiao Tong University recently announced a significant partnership with Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), for the construction of the national major science and technology project known as the “Deep-Sea All-Weather Resident Floating Research Facility,” also referred to as the “Offshore Floating Island.”

Innovative Design and Objectives of the Project

The “Offshore Floating Island” project, which was awarded to Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding with a bid of 2.763 billion yuan (approximately $414 million), is set to revolutionize deep-sea science and engineering. This groundbreaking initiative combines the concepts of “long-term stationing” and “rapid mobility,” incorporating advanced technologies to enhance research capabilities in extreme conditions.

The platform, designed with a unique “semi-submersible twin-hull” structure, boasts a maximum displacement of 74,000 tons and can accommodate up to 238 personnel. Capable of reaching a cruising speed of 11 knots and operating in Sea State 7, the platform is engineered to withstand the forces of a Category 17 typhoon, ensuring safe operations under severe weather conditions.

Supporting Marine Research and Development

The main facility platform of the “Offshore Floating Island” project includes ship-based laboratory systems and shore-based support systems to facilitate a wide range of marine research activities. The shipboard laboratories focus on marine equipment, marine science, and meteorological observation, while the shore-based support system serves as a central command center for operational activities.

This project aims to support key objectives in marine science and engineering, including the development of high-end marine equipment, sustainable marine resource utilization, marine meteorological forecasting, and biodiversity research in deep-sea ecosystems. By enhancing research capabilities and providing new pathways for marine exploration, the “Offshore Floating Island” project is poised to become a landmark asset in the field of deep-sea science and technology.

In conclusion, the collaboration between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding marks a significant milestone in the advancement of marine research and technology. With completion and delivery expected by June 2030, the “Offshore Floating Island” project holds great promise for the future of oceanic exploration and scientific discovery.
