Palantir Calls South Korea Its Largest Market Outside the US, Embeds AI Directly

Palantir, the American big-data and AI software company, has identified South Korea as a key market outside the United States and is intensifying its efforts in industrial AI within the realms of shipbuilding, manufacturing, and defense. The company recently unveiled its second pop-up store in Hannam-dong, Yongsan District, Seoul, on Oct. 22, where senior technology executives shed light on their shipbuilding collaboration with HD Hyundai and their “sovereign AI” strategy.

Investing in South Korea for the Long Term

During the event, Chad Wahlquist, overseeing AI architecture, along with Chief Architect Akshay Krishnaswamy and Head of External Relations Eliano Younes, emphasized Palantir’s commitment to the South Korean market. Younes highlighted South Korea’s strength in both community support and commercial partnerships, positioning it as a vital market for the company’s growth. The event, meticulously planned over four months, aimed to solidify Palantir’s presence in South Korea, distinct from its previous year’s event in Seongsu-dong.

Focusing on Sovereign AI and Industrial Advancements

The collaboration with HD Hyundai’s shipyard in Busan showcased tangible progress, with Palantir’s AI models and ontology being deployed on actual vessels. Wahlquist highlighted the significance of maintaining knowledge and expertise within South Korean companies, promoting the idea of “sovereign AI.” Krishnaswamy praised South Korea’s industrial structure, citing its relevance in solving crucial issues in manufacturing sectors like shipbuilding, telecommunications, and semiconductors.

Competing in the Defense AI Market

Palantir expressed its willingness to cooperate and compete with emerging players like Anduril and Shield AI in the defense AI sector. Wahlquist debunked concerns regarding job displacement, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between humans and AI in enhancing productivity. The company differentiated itself from competitors like Anthropic by highlighting its holistic approach centered around forward deployed engineers (FDEs).

As Palantir continues to expand its footprint in South Korea, the company’s open architecture and diverse use cases promise a dynamic landscape for AI integration across various industries. With the spotlight on innovative solutions and strategic partnerships, Palantir’s venture into industrial AI marks a significant milestone in its global growth trajectory.
