China adds new state-owned shipbuilding player in Guangzhou
Guangzhou, a prominent shipbuilding hub in southern China, has recently unveiled a new state-owned maritime industrial group to enhance its manufacturing capabilities and localize more of the industry’s supply chain. The Guangzhou Marine Equipment Group, with a registered capital of RMB2bn ($300m), has officially commenced operations after a grand unveiling ceremony this week.
Collaboration for Industry Development
Owned entirely by the Guangzhou Industrial Investment Holding Group, with the municipal government as the ultimate shareholder, the company was established in July and has now kicked off its operations by signing various cooperation agreements. The aim is to consolidate Guangzhou’s shipbuilding sector by merging local manufacturing assets with investments and maritime services.
The group has partnered with key players such as Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), Huangpu Wenchong, COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers, SEAHI Robotics, and the Guangzhou branch of China Classification Society. By leveraging businesses involved in marine propulsion, heavy engineering, and shipboard equipment, including the Guangzhou Diesel Engine Factory, the group plans to expand into vessel retrofits, equipment maintenance, industrial park development, leasing, and inspection services.
Ambitious Business Expansion Goals
With a target of achieving a business scale of approximately $3.9bn by 2030, as reported by local government sources, Guangzhou Marine Equipment Group is poised for significant growth. This launch coincides with the city’s ongoing efforts to expand its shipbuilding infrastructure, with the development of a new marine equipment manufacturing and shipbuilding base at Longxue North in Nansha, requiring an investment of around $1.09bn. The facility, expected to be operational by 2029, will be managed by GSI.
Additionally, the group is expected to contribute to this development project, although specific financial details have not been disclosed. This initiative follows a series of strategic investments by Guangzhou’s established shipbuilders to tackle increasing orderbooks, including outsourcing hull block production and expanding physical facilities at different locations.
In conclusion, Guangzhou’s establishment of the Marine Equipment Group marks a significant step towards enhancing the city’s shipbuilding industry, fostering local ownership, and driving economic growth in the maritime sector.
