HD Hyundai Launches Largest Ammonia Vessel

The world’s largest ammonia-powered vessel, named Terra Clove, has recently made its grand debut in Ulsan. Built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, this massive ship measures an impressive 230 meters in length and 36.5 meters in width. The unveiling took place at a naming ceremony held at the Ulsan shipyard on October 22, where the 93,000-cubic-meter very large ammonia-powered carrier was officially christened.

Environmentally Friendly Innovation

Terra Clove is the first of two sister ships ordered by Singapore-based EPS in 2023. The vessel’s name, Terra Clove, is a combination of “Terra,” the Latin word for earth, and “Clove,” symbolizing a flower bud, highlighting its environmentally friendly values. The event was attended by around 110 officials, including prominent figures such as Lee Sang-kyun, Vice Chairman and Head of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, EPS CEO Cyril Ducau, and Loh Koon Yen, chairman of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.

Cutting-Edge Technology and Design

At the heart of Terra Clove lies its revolutionary ammonia dual-fuel propulsion system. This innovative design allows the vessel to use either conventional marine fuel oil or ammonia, a sustainable fuel, depending on operational requirements. Additionally, the ship incorporates advanced safety features, including a real-time ammonia leak detection device and an emission reduction system, addressing the safety concerns associated with ammonia-powered ships.

The vessel’s transport capacity and efficiency have been optimized with the inclusion of four cargo tanks specially designed and built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. These tanks enable the stable transportation of both ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas simultaneously. Terra Clove also features a shaft generator that produces electricity using the propulsion engine’s rotating shaft, along with nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides reduction systems to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

Through the construction of Terra Clove, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has once again demonstrated its technological prowess in the ammonia-powered ship sector. Earlier this year, the company delivered the world’s first 46,000-cubic-meter medium-sized ammonia-powered gas carrier, further solidifying its position as a leader in eco-friendly maritime solutions.

Following the final outfitting work, Terra Clove is set to be delivered to its shipowner, EPS, in early November, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards decarbonizing the shipping industry.
