New Fairbanks Morse Defense Center of Excellence Doubles Manufacturing Capacity

Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD) has initiated construction on its third Center of Excellence (CoE3) at the Bird-Johnson Propeller Company facility in Pascagoula, Miss. This new center aims to double the capacity for producing advanced naval propulsion systems.

Expanding Manufacturing Capabilities

The $60 million project, with a $27 million investment from the U.S. Navy, including $22 million from Australia’s contribution under the AUKUS Pillar I effort, will see the addition of 38,000 square feet of manufacturing space. It will also incorporate two new five-axis computer numerical control (CNC) machines capable of handling parts weighing up to 100 metric tons. This expansion is crucial in addressing current industry capacity constraints and supporting submarine production and fleet readiness.

Supporting National Security Programs

Dan Rediger, FMD President of Power and Propulsion, emphasized the significance of CoE3 in meeting the escalating demands of specialized propulsion systems required for the Virginia-class submarine program and next-generation surface combatants. The project is a testament to successful public-private partnerships in bolstering the nation’s economy and revitalizing the maritime industrial base.

The addition of two new CNC machines and the modernization of legacy foundry capabilities showcase FMD’s commitment to innovation and efficiency in manufacturing processes. The expansion is expected to create new high-wage jobs, support training programs, and contribute to the growth of the defense manufacturing sector in the region.

As the only privately-owned U.S. foundry certified for large-scale Navy propeller manufacturing, the Pascagoula facility is designated a U.S. National Asset. The new capacity is scheduled to be operational by the first quarter of 2028, aligning with America’s historic 250th anniversary.

Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD) is renowned for delivering battle-proven naval systems and lifecycle support to ensure the fleet’s readiness. With a legacy of over 150 years in engineering and manufacturing, FMD’s portfolio includes a range of mission-critical technologies tailored for demanding marine environments.

Bird-Johnson Propeller Company, acquired by FMD in 2025, has been a global leader in advanced propulsion systems since 1956. The company’s expertise in controllable-pitch propellers, fixed-pitch propellers, and water jets has served over 70 navies worldwide.

The groundbreaking of the new Center of Excellence marks a significant milestone in strengthening America’s defense manufacturing capabilities and underscores the commitment to innovation and growth in the industry.
