(HOUSTON) ABS and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have inked a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) that calls for cooperation on clean energy development in the maritime sector and decarbonisation of maritime operations.
The purpose of the agreement between ABS and the DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is to combine the knowledge and skills of both companies to promote emissions reduction programs that will benefit the marine sector.
Through this new partnership, ABS and the DOE will be able to leverage each other’s extensive expertise and complementary skills to advance the implementation of important clean energy programs. According to Christopher J. Wiernicki, Chairman and CEO of ABS, “We combine the special expertise and assets of two mission-driven organizations to support the maritime clean energy transition in the United States and influence international maritime decarbonisation strategy in the public interest.”
According to Michael Berube, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Sustainable Transportation and Fuels at EERE for DOE, “we need to ensure we are receptive to new information in this ever-changing landscape as we move to fully decarbonize the global maritime sector by 2050.” Through open communication, information exchange, and cooperative research on U.S. maritime transportation decarbonisation initiatives, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the DOE and ABS will advance clean energy development and the decarbonisation of the maritime industry.
A variety of technical advice exchanges, action plans for maritime decarbonisation, ABS support for U.S. delegations on zero emission shipping and other maritime decarbonisation activities, and national and international maritime policy are the target areas for partnership.
