ABS and Korean Shipbuilding Leaders Forge MOU to Boost Workforce and Regulatory Cooperation for U.S. MRO Market
ABS, a leading maritime classification society, has recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with prominent Korean shipbuilding and research organizations. The aim of this collaboration is to enhance workforce development, technical certification, and regulatory cooperation within the Korea-U.S. shipbuilding and maritime sectors.
Key Partnerships and Initiatives
The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO), the Korea Offshore & Shipbuilding Association (KOSHIPA), and the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Center (KUSPC) have joined forces with ABS in this groundbreaking agreement. The MOU was formalized during the opening of the KUSPC, highlighting a pivotal focus on building workforce capability for the U.S. naval maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) market.
ABS Senior Vice President of Government Services, Ron Rábago, emphasized the critical role of a skilled workforce in advancing shipbuilding practices. He stated, “Advanced shipbuilding requires an advanced workforce. One that is trained, certified, and ready to meet the demanding standards of modern naval and commercial shipbuilding, modernization, and repair.”
Collaborative Efforts and Future Plans
Under the terms of the MOU, each partner brings unique expertise to the table. KRISO will provide insights into advanced ship engineering, smart manufacturing, and shipbuilding research and development. KOSHIPA will focus on supporting workforce development and production training through its extensive industrial network. Meanwhile, KUSPC will play a vital role in facilitating bilateral coordination among governments, industry stakeholders, and research institutions.
ABS, with its extensive experience in classification, certification, and regulatory standards, will guide the partners in areas such as maritime safety, international and U.S. naval technical standards, and regulatory frameworks. Together, the parties aim to establish jointly recognized qualification and certification programs, promote instructor and workforce exchange, and enhance industrial readiness for participation in U.S. shipbuilding projects.
