Alfa Laval Unveils Advanced LNG Fuel Supply System

Alfa Laval has launched its innovative FCM LNG fuel supply solution, designed specifically for LNG-powered vessels. This new system enhances Alfa Laval’s offerings in alternative fuels, utilizing cutting-edge cryogenic technology to provide a reliable and efficient fuel supply for shipowners transitioning to LNG. The announcement was made during the Marintec 2025 event, highlighting the company’s commitment to supporting the maritime industry’s decarbonization efforts.

Meeting Market Demands for LNG Solutions

As the maritime sector embarks on its journey toward decarbonization, liquefied natural gas (LNG) has emerged as a crucial transitional fuel. It presents a practical option for reducing emissions while the infrastructure for other alternative fuels, such as methanol and ammonia, is still being developed. This shift has created a pressing need for dependable and efficient LNG solutions that help marine operators achieve performance goals, manage capital and operational expenditures, and comply with regulatory standards.

In response to this growing demand, Alfa Laval introduced the FCM LNG fuel supply system, which incorporates advanced cryogenic technology from Fives, a recent acquisition. This integration allows Alfa Laval to offer a high-performance system that facilitates the safe and efficient adoption of LNG as a marine fuel. Peter Sahlen, Head of Marine Separation, Fuel Supply Systems & Heat Transfer at Alfa Laval, emphasized the company’s long-standing commitment to addressing customer needs for a specialized LNG fuel line solution. He stated, “By combining our expertise in fuel supply systems with the newly acquired cryogenic technology, we can deliver a system that meets current fuel demands and supports future emission targets.” The first test benches are expected to be operational by 2026, with full marine deliveries slated for 2027.

Enhancing Reliability and Efficiency in LNG Supply

Alfa Laval’s acquisition of CorHex in 2015 and Fives Cryogenics in 2025 has significantly bolstered its expertise in cryogenic processes and pump technologies. The FCM LNG system leverages this knowledge, enabling high-pressure gas injection in marine diesel engines. Vincent Higelin, Global Sales Manager for Alfa Laval Cryogenic Technologies, noted that the addition of cryogenic capabilities further solidifies Alfa Laval’s position in the LNG market. He remarked, “We are proud to contribute over 65 years of expertise in cryogenic technology to the maritime energy transition.”

The FCM LNG system is designed to operate under extreme cryogenic conditions and high pressures, offering flexibility across various capacities. It promises exceptional reliability, efficiency, and operational safety, making it an ideal choice for shipowners navigating the shift to cleaner fuels. The introduction of this system underscores Alfa Laval’s dedication to providing comprehensive solutions across the spectrum of alternative fuels. With a robust portfolio that includes technologies for methanol, LPG, and ammonia, Alfa Laval is well-positioned to support shipowners in their transition to sustainable energy sources. Peter Sahlen reiterated the company’s commitment, stating, “Our goal is to equip shipowners with flexible, innovative solutions that enable the shift to cleaner fuels today while preparing them for the energy sources of tomorrow.”
