All approvals for bunkering licences, permits to be handled by Transport
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook announced that the Ministry of Transport (MOT) will take on the responsibility of approving bunkering licenses and related permits as the single lead agency starting from Feb 1, 2027. This move aims to streamline the approval process and drive the growth of the bunkering sector in Malaysia.
Focus on Green Bunkering for Sustainable Shipping
Loke emphasized the importance of green bunkering, in line with international obligations under the International Maritime Organization. The adoption of greener fuels such as methanol, liquefied natural gas, and ammonia is being pushed to achieve the 2030 carbon intensity goal and the 2050 net-zero emission target. This initiative aligns with Malaysia’s vision of becoming an Asia-Pacific bunkering hub by 2030.
Enhancing Malaysia’s Maritime Industry
The Ministry of Transport is actively promoting the Malaysia Maritime Bunkering initiative to build a greener and more sustainable marine fuel ecosystem. Additionally, efforts are being made to boost the Malaysian vessel fleet by encouraging local shipowners to build and register more vessels under the Malaysian flag. This initiative not only aims to strengthen the maritime industry but also create job opportunities in shipbuilding, shipyards, and ship repair sectors.
By centralizing the approval process for bunkering licenses, focusing on green bunkering practices, and enhancing the local vessel fleet, Malaysia is taking significant steps towards becoming a leader in sustainable maritime practices and a competitive player in the global shipping industry.
