Alpha Gas Orders Two VLGC/VLACs at Hengli Heavy Industries

Alpha Gas, a Greek shipowner under the umbrella of Anna Angelicoussis, is making waves in the maritime industry with its recent expansion of the gas carrier fleet. The company has placed an order with Hengli Heavy Industries for two 88,000 m³ Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs)/Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs), designated HL-G88K-4 and HL-G88K-5, set to be delivered in 2029. This marks Alpha Gas’s first venture into the Chinese shipbuilding market, signaling a strategic move towards diversification and growth.

Alpha Gas’s Growing Fleet

With this latest order, Alpha Gas’s total orderbook now boasts six gas carriers, including the two vessels from Hengli Heavy Industries. The fleet expansion includes two 174,000 m³ Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers and one 93,000 m³ VLGC/VLAC from Hanwha Ocean, as well as one 88,000 m³ VLGC/VLAC from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. These vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2027 and 2029, showcasing Alpha Gas’s commitment to modernizing its fleet and meeting evolving market demands.

Strategic Shifts and Industry Impact

Alpha Gas’s initial focus on the LNG carrier segment has evolved over the years, with a strategic shift towards the VLGC/VLAC market in 2024. This shift has led to collaborations with key players in the industry, including South Korean shipyards and now Hengli Heavy Industries in China. The expansion into the Chinese shipbuilding market not only signifies Alpha Gas’s growth trajectory but also highlights the company’s adaptability and foresight in navigating the competitive landscape of the maritime sector.

Rise of Chinese Shipbuilders

The partnership between Alpha Gas and Hengli Heavy Industries comes amidst a notable trend in the industry, with Chinese shipbuilders securing a significant portion of global orders for VLGCs and VLACs. In the first seven months of 2026, Chinese shipbuilders claimed 65% of the orders, surpassing their South Korean counterparts for the first time. Hengli Heavy Industries, in particular, emerged as a frontrunner with 14 VLAC orders, solidifying its position as a key player in the cryogenic vessel sector.

In conclusion, Alpha Gas’s strategic expansion into the Chinese shipbuilding market with Hengli Heavy Industries underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and growth. As the maritime industry continues to evolve, partnerships and collaborations between established players and emerging shipyards are crucial in driving progress and meeting the increasing demand for advanced vessels.
