AMSA launches lifejacket safety initiative

The Life-Saving Importance of Wearing a Lifejacket: AMSA’s Urgent Safety Message

Wearing a lifejacket can save your life—but only if you wear it. This simple action can mean the difference between life and death at sea. Yet, too many people are still not wearing lifejackets, putting themselves at great risk. Families lose loved ones to the water, often because they weren’t wearing this critical safety gear. No excuse will ever comfort those left behind after such a tragic, preventable loss.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is launching a new safety campaign to stress the importance of wearing lifejackets while on the water. They want everyone, from recreational boaters to commercial vessel operators, to understand how vital it is to wear a lifejacket.

Why Are Lifejackets So Important?

Research from Royal Lifesaving Society – Australia and AMSA shows that many drowning deaths occur when people go overboard from a boat or ship. Sadly, most of these people are not wearing lifejackets.

David Marsh, AMSA’s National Operations Manager, explains that lifejackets can dramatically increase your chances of survival if you suddenly fall overboard. “If you’re not wearing a lifejacket when you fall, you probably won’t have time to put one on before it’s too late,” Marsh said.

This is why it’s so important to think about the risks before you head out on the water. If there’s any chance you could fall overboard, you should already be wearing a lifejacket. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

Lifejackets Are Essential for Everyone

For commercial vessels, it’s not just common sense—it’s the law. Operators must conduct risk assessments to decide when lifejackets should be worn and have clear procedures in place to protect their crew.

Over the next few weeks and months, AMSA will be working hard to share this important message with all boaters and vessel operators. They want to make sure people understand that wearing a lifejacket can prevent unnecessary deaths.

Mr. Marsh said AMSA has heard many excuses over the years for why people don’t wear lifejackets. One of the most common excuses is that lifejackets are uncomfortable.

But, Marsh points out, this isn’t true anymore. There are many different types of lifejackets available today, including slimline options that allow for free movement. “There is no reason that is ever going to be good enough for families left behind after a preventable tragedy,” Marsh said.

Assess Risks and Wear a Lifejacket

The truth is, accidents happen. Whether you’re working or having fun on the water, there’s always a chance that you could go overboard. But this doesn’t have to end in tragedy.

By assessing the risks and making sure you and your crew are wearing lifejackets, you can ensure everyone gets home safely. As Marsh puts it, “Everyone has the right to come home to their loved ones.”

AMSA’s Role in Safety

AMSA is responsible for maritime search and rescue, as well as regulating the safety of commercial vessels in Australia. They are also part of the Australian and New Zealand Safe Boating Education Group, which works with different agencies to improve safety for everyone on the water.

AMSA’s message is clear: Wearing a lifejacket can save your life. Don’t let a preventable tragedy happen to you or your loved ones. Make the smart choice—wear a lifejacket every time you’re on the water.
