Ancient ship launched in Goa
Launch of Ancient Stitched Ship in Goa
The Ancient Stitched Ship was launched on Thursday at Hodi Innovations shipyard in Goa. Rear Admiral KM Ramakrishnan, Flag Officer Commanding Karnataka Naval Area, officiated the ceremony. This unique vessel pays homage to traditional Indian shipbuilding techniques, showcasing the rich maritime heritage of the region.
Craftsmanship and Collaboration
The Ancient Stitched Ship is crafted from wood, coir, and natural resin. Its construction features coconut fiber stitching, an age-old Indian maritime technique that highlights the skills of traditional craftsmen. This project is a result of collaboration with craftsman Babu Shankaran from Kerala, who played a vital role in the ship’s design and construction.
Historian Sanjeev Sanyal initiated the project, emphasizing the importance of preserving traditional maritime practices. The execution of this project involved a triple agreement between the Indian Navy, the Ministry of Culture, and Hodi Innovations. This partnership aims to revive and promote ancient shipbuilding methods that have been largely forgotten in modern times.
During the launch ceremony, Rear Admiral Ramakrishnan announced plans to dock the Ancient Stitched Ship at Karwar port. This decision underscores the historical significance of stitched ships in Indian maritime history. The ship will serve as a testament to the craftsmanship and cultural heritage of the region.
