Anemoi Marine Launches Rotor Sails on Berge Meru
UK-based Anemoi Marine Technologies has successfully installed four innovative rotor sails on the Berge Meru, a Newcastlemax vessel owned by Singapore’s Berge Bulk. This installation, completed at Yiu Lian Dockyards in China, marks a significant step in integrating wind-assisted propulsion technology into commercial shipping. Following this installation, the Berge Meru has embarked on its inaugural voyage to Singapore, showcasing the potential of sustainable shipping solutions.
Advancements in Wind Propulsion Technology
The newly installed rotor sails, each measuring 5 meters in width and 35 meters in height, are designed to harness wind power for auxiliary propulsion. This technology aims to reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions during maritime operations. Anemoi Marine Technologies previously installed similar rotor sails on another Berge Bulk vessel, the Berge Neblina, in June 2024. The successful deployment of these sails on two vessels underscores the growing trend towards sustainable practices in the shipping industry.
Clare Urmston, CEO of Anemoi Marine Technologies, expressed pride in completing this second project with Berge Bulk. She emphasized the practicality and operational flexibility of integrating wind propulsion into bulk carriers. The rotor sails can be lowered when necessary, allowing for adaptability during port operations and compliance with air-draught restrictions. Notably, in adverse weather conditions, the sails can remain operational without generating thrust, simply by switching them off.
In addition to the recent installation, Anemoi Marine secured £1.2 million in funding from the UK’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC) to develop a next-generation folding sail system aimed at Kamsarmax and Panamax bulk carriers. This initiative will also focus on aerodynamic design improvements to further enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions, reflecting the industry’s commitment to greener shipping solutions.
Future of Sustainable Shipping
The integration of rotor sails represents a significant advancement in the shipping sector’s efforts to adopt environmentally friendly technologies. As global shipping faces increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, innovations like those from Anemoi Marine are crucial. The successful installation on the Berge Meru not only demonstrates the viability of wind-assisted propulsion but also highlights the potential for wider adoption across the industry.
With the ongoing development of new technologies and funding initiatives, the future of sustainable shipping looks promising. Companies like Anemoi Marine are at the forefront of this transformation, paving the way for a more eco-friendly maritime industry. As more vessels adopt wind propulsion systems, the shipping sector can expect to see significant reductions in fuel consumption and emissions, contributing to global sustainability goals.
