Angola Launches First BR71 MK II Corvette

Angola has marked a significant milestone in its naval modernization efforts with the launch of the NRA Ekuikui II, the first BR71 MK II Combattante multi-mission corvette. The vessel was unveiled at CMN Naval’s shipyard in Cherbourg, France, on March 10, 2026. This initiative is part of a broader EUR 1 billion defense agreement between Angola and the United Arab Emirates, aimed at bolstering maritime security along Angola’s South Atlantic coast.

Details of the Naval Modernization Program

The NRA Ekuikui II is the lead ship in a three-vessel class designed through collaboration between the UAE’s EDGE Group, its naval subsidiary Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB), and French shipbuilder CMN Naval. This partnership combines European shipbuilding expertise with advanced Emirati systems integration and technology transfer. Once operational, the BR71 MK II corvettes are expected to enhance Angola’s capabilities in monitoring and securing its maritime approaches, particularly in protecting offshore energy infrastructure and vital shipping lanes.

The program’s industrial organization reflects a distributed production model, linking France and the UAE. CMN Naval is responsible for the design and construction of the first and third corvettes, while the second unit will be assembled in Abu Dhabi by ADSB, following a technology transfer from the French shipyard. EDGE Group oversees the entire program and supports additional maritime security projects associated with the Angolan contract. Previously, ADSB delivered several high-speed interceptor crafts to Angola, which will complement the future corvettes and enhance coastal monitoring and rapid response capabilities.

Advanced Features and Strategic Implications

The BR71 MK II Combattante class is an evolution of the long-standing Combattante lineage developed by CMN Naval. The corvette features a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, designed for reduced radar signature and enhanced visibility. Measuring approximately 70.3 meters in length and 11 meters in beam, the vessel can accommodate a crew of around 50 and achieve speeds exceeding 30 knots, making it suitable for rapid response missions. With a cruising speed of 12 knots, it boasts a range of nearly 2,500 nautical miles, allowing for extensive patrol operations within Angola’s exclusive economic zone.

The corvette is equipped for various maritime security tasks, including aviation and boarding capabilities. It features a stern flight deck for a helicopter or unmanned aerial systems and two rigid hull inflatable boats for boarding operations. The integration of unmanned aviation is a key aspect of the program, with the HT 100 NAVAL unmanned helicopter enhancing operational capabilities by providing real-time sensor data to the ship’s command center.

The launch of the NRA Ekuikui II underscores the growing strategic partnership between Angola and the UAE. This collaboration extends beyond naval capabilities to include border protection technologies and training initiatives. In October 2025, EDGE signed a letter of intent with Angola’s Ministry of Interior to develop an integrated border security system, highlighting the evolving defense cooperation between the Gulf and African nations.
