APMT welcomes Maersk’s methanol-enabled containership

APM Terminals Advances Green Initiatives at Los Angeles’ Pier 400

APM Terminals (APMT) recently marked a significant milestone by welcoming A.P. Moller-Maersk’s methanol-enabled containership to Pier 400 in Los Angeles. This event underscores the terminal’s commitment to advancing sustainable practices as part of its broader electrification efforts.

As one of the eight APMT facilities worldwide involved in a major electrification project, Pier 400 is focused on integrating advanced technology and electric container handling equipment to align with the company’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2040. In line with this initiative, the terminal is set to receive two fully electric Auto Straddle Carriers in September, marking a critical step in reducing its carbon footprint. Additionally, a pilot project will commence to retrofit two hybrid Auto Straddle Carriers, converting them to fully electric operation in collaboration with the ILWU workforce.

Pier 400’s Managing Director, Jon Poelma, highlighted the terminal’s strategic importance in forming a green corridor between Los Angeles and key cities in China, positioning it as one of the most environmentally advanced terminals in the United States. Complementing these efforts, the Port of Los Angeles completed a rail extension project on Pier 400 in July, designed to enhance cargo movement, reduce pollution, and improve traffic safety, further solidifying the terminal’s role in promoting sustainable logistics.
