Aqmaris and Wuhu Shipyard Finalize Major Bulk Carrier Deal
Turkish shipping company Aqmaris Ship Management has entered into a significant agreement with China’s Wuhu Shipyard for the construction of four ultramax bulk carriers. This deal marks a pivotal moment for the Istanbul-based operator, as it represents one of their first major newbuild contracts since their establishment. The four vessels, each with a deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 64,500, are designed to meet the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Tier III emissions standards and comply with the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase III, the latest benchmark for environmental efficiency in shipping.
The new vessels will be equipped with high-voltage shore power connections, allowing them to reduce emissions while docked. Additionally, they can be adapted to incorporate lithium-ion battery systems, a feature that many shipowners consider essential for future-proofing their fleets. The delivery of these vessels is anticipated in 2028, with the contract structured to include two firm units and two optional vessels. Financial details of the agreement have not been disclosed.
