Assam sets sail into shipbuilding, first shipyard coming up at Dharapur

Assam is set to make a significant foray into the shipbuilding sector with the establishment of its first shipyard at Dharapur, near the Guwahati airport. The Assam Inland Waterways Company Ltd (AIWCL) and Bharat A to Z Pvt Ltd (BAZ) have come together to form the Assam Shipyard Pvt Ltd (ASPL), marking a milestone in the state’s industrial development.
Development Plans and Timeline
The shipyard, to be constructed on 10.33 acres of AIWCL-leased land under a 90-year lease, is scheduled to commence shipbuilding activities in January 2027. ASPL has outlined plans to construct 40 barges within the next five years, signaling a commitment to bolstering the maritime infrastructure in the region.
Sustainable Practices and Operations
With an initial investment of Rs 75 crore, the project forms part of a larger Rs 475-crore investment proposed by BAZ. Environmental experts will evaluate the wildlife and vegetation surrounding the site, including dolphins, reptiles, and bamboo, before commencing development. The facility is set to incorporate sustainable energy sources like solar power and hydrogen, emphasizing a commitment to eco-friendly practices.
ASPL aims to operate as an AI-enabled shipyard, with a focus on leveraging skilled local manpower. While a select number of specialists may be initially sourced from outside Assam, local personnel will undergo training to gradually assume operational responsibilities. The company’s scope of work includes ship design, manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning, alongside ship repair, overhauling, and maintenance services.
Boosting Inland Water Transport and Industrial Growth
Managing Director of AIWCL, Sraranga Pani Sarma, highlighted that the joint venture would enhance inland water transport for cargo movement and tourism, bridging connectivity between National Waterway-16 and National Waterway-2. The partnership’s strategic alignment with the vision of Advantage Assam 2.0 underscores the potential for economic growth and investment in the state.
BAZ director, Sohel Kazani, emphasized the project’s focus on constructing container vessels to optimize transportation costs and enhance goods movement between Kolkata and the northeast. The shipyard’s role in facilitating ship recycling and the construction of specialized boats for security, passenger, and tourism purposes underscores a comprehensive approach to developing the maritime ecosystem in the region.
In summary, the establishment of Assam’s first shipyard signifies a significant step towards bolstering the state’s industrial landscape and enhancing maritime infrastructure, while prioritizing sustainable practices and economic growth.
